FURTHER DETAILS
Celebrating Cristifori, A Practical History of the Piano and its Predecessors.
In this, Kate and Stephen will introduce you to the development of the modern piano, using the instruments in Benslow’s collection, namely harpsichord, spinet, clavichord, and square piano. The course starts at 7.00pm on the Tuesday and ends at 4.00pm on the Thursday. Participants should prepare pieces to play on each instrument before they arrive (Messrs Bach, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Handel, and others are eagerly waiting to assist).
Easy Piano Course
The course starts at 7.00pm on the Friday evening with dinner and a session of instruction, and continues to 4.00 pm on the Sunday. This is for pianists with some experience, between approximately grades 1 and 3. All courses include solo workshops, ensemble playing, aural and technical matters in an informal, friendly atmosphere.
Kick Start Piano Courses
If you played some years ago, and would like to revive your skills, or if you have reached a plateau in your performing and need a special boost to get going again, this is for you. The course starts at 7.00pm on the Friday evening with dinner and a session of instruction, and continues to 4.00 pm on the Sunday. All courses include solo workshops, ensemble playing, aural and technical matters in an informal, friendly atmosphere.
Non-Competitive Music Festival
Our first two Non-Comp Festivals in 2009 and 2010 were great successes, and this will now be a regular in our syllabus, and for all instruments (including voice), not just piano! It is for people of all ages and all stages, from beginner to professional performer, each of whom will receive a written assessment of their outpourings on the day, and a chance to try out new musical ideas.
Schumann’s Birthday
Robert is 200 this year, and is having a party, to which all are invited.! There will be master classes with Kate and our wonderful friend Masa Tayama (see below), and a lecture-recital on Sunday. One whole morning (Sunday) is devoted to young pianists – musical games and performance classes – any standard.
Masa Tayama
Masa is a Japanese piano virtuoso, thought by many to be one of the world’s finest exponents of the music of Rachmaninov. He performs regularly in America, Japan, Europe and the UK. We are fortunate that, as he is a personal friend, he finds time to come to Arlesey to perform in our home.
