Piano lessons

I teach at home (Edgeworth House) and can offer a choice of three grand pianos and one upright to those who

wish to learn with me.     Individuals can be taught on a weekly basis, although adults often have lessons fortnightly

or monthly.     While my principal interest is classical music I am happy for pupils to work on lighter genre, such as

jazz from the printed copy.       I am not, however, a specialist in jazz, and prefer this to be taught by an expert in that

field.   I expect my students to be committed.   I do not insist on students taking exams, although they often need an

ncentive which can be provided by exams, competitive music festivals, and the pupils concerts which I arrange.

Pupil’s Concerts

Each year I put on several concerts based on a theme (music of one country, film music, creatures, piano duets, accompanying an instrumentalist or singer etc) in which pupils of all grades can perform, and one concert in which advanced students play works with an orchestra.    All students are expected to attend these concerts as part of their studies.    Many of my past and present students are teachers or professional performers.

Adult Students

Each term my adult students join in (some say endure) a Performance Workshop.   I love to teach adults who have

never

had the opportunity to learn before as well as those at higher levels, including those who want to work for a diploma,

post-diploma students, and teachers who wish to continue improving.

          £65 an hour for adults

Normal arrangements in the case of cancellation are:-

c)    Payment in full is due for any lesson, whether prepaid or not, cancelled other than as noted above.

In exceptional circumstances I am prepared, totally at my discretion, to make alternative arrangements, but in

such cases students are asked to pay a deposit equal to the cost of one lesson.   This is held to cover the cost

of a missed lesson, a further deposit becoming payable on resumption of lessons.  Any unused deposit is returned

at the end of the period of tuition.

DISABILITIES

It is essential that I know at outset if my pupils have any problems which could effect their ability to learn and to concentrate.   The sort of things which can challenge progress are dyslexia, attention deficiency disorder, epilepsy, hearing difficulties, sight impairment and many other ailments.   If I know of the problems, I can adjust my approach

to ensure that the pupil has the best chance of success.   If I don’t know, my ability to help is itself severely impaired.

CONCERTS

Each year I arrange a number of concerts in which all pupils are invited to play.   It should be understood that attendance at these concerts is expected, as they are seen as part of the student’s overall musical education.   Listening to unfamiliar repertoire, and witnessing the performances of fellow pupils (of all grades) can be of great

help to the aspiring pianist.
